NSW Blues manager Brad Fittler says Billy Slater needs to be prepared for a series of “engagement” obstacles in the relationships linking the legendary full-back to the vacant Maroons head coach role.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Slater has emerged as the favorite to take over as head coach of the Maroons in the wake of Paul Green’s shock release.
Slater, who retired in late 2018, was famously probed for the role before he was later handed over to the former Cowboys manager.
Responding to news that Slater may be Queensland’s next manager, Fittler revealed how his recent success with the Blues, who have won three of the last four Origin series, returns to lessons learned while coaching at the club level.
“There is a lot that I have learned in the last four years where without the experience I had at the Roosters, I would have suffered a lot,” Fittler told 2GB. Radio Wide World of Sports.
“The only thing I do when I choose my staff is that I make sure that I am very much involved in the NRL club experience.
“Craig Fitzgibbon, the coaches, are all deep and rooted in successful clubs.
“There are things you will miss if you haven’t coached before.”
Before taking the job in the Blues in 2018, Fittler had previous experience as head coach for his former team, the Roosters, between 2007 and 2009. After a successful first season, things got bad and he ended up was fired with a 43% win rate.
While the Origin series doesn’t take up the entire NRL season, Fittler revealed that his role with the New South Wales Rugby League sees him take on a big commitment, which Slater will have to tackle before taking on any potential roles.
“My commitment to New South Wales extends far beyond the eight weeks of State of Origin. We do a lot with the kids, a lot of travel … there’s a lot to do behind the scenes,” added Fittler.
“It all depends on what Queensland wants.
“If they want someone to be full time, can Billy from Melbourne do it? That’s a commitment in itself.
“He’s a great analyst, he knows the game like anyone else, it will be interesting to see what happens.”
